Martin draws bases-loaded walk in FSU’s walk-off win

Tyler Martin drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th inning as the No. 9 Florida State baseball team snuck out a 6-5 win over No. 25 Georgia Southern on Wednesday night. Martin worked a 3-0 count, took a called strike and fouled off a pair of pitches before drawing ball four and touching off a celebration at Dick Howser Stadium.

Reese Albert led off the 11th with a single. Following a Connor Moore strikeout, AJ Shaver and Jordan Carrion reached base on walks, and pinch-hitter Brock Mathis struck out.

Carrion went 3 for 4 for FSU (24-13), which has won five straight games — all against ranked teams (Florida, Louisville and Georgia Southern).

The Seminoles trailed late as Noah Ledford hit a pair of home runs, a two-run shot and a solo home run, to give Georgia Southern a 5-1 lead after seven innings.

Vincent and Martin had RBI groundouts in the eighth inning. Carrion had a two-run double in the ninth to tie the game at 5. Carrion advanced to third on a wild pitch but Martin grounded out to end the inning.

The Seminoles had nine hits, including four doubles, and drew 11 walks. Vincent had an RBI double in the fifth inning to get FSU on the board.

But FSU was just 2 for 19 (.105) with runners in scoring position through nine innings. Alex Toral stranded a pair of runners with a ground out in the fifth and two more with a strikeout in the eighth, while Jackson Greene hit a fly ball to the track in right-center field to end the seventh inning and leave the bases loaded.

Greene had a one-out double in the ninth but slid into second base with an injury (FSU coach Mike Martin Jr. said after the game it was too early to determine the severity of the injury). James Tibbs then walked to bring up Carrion, who doubled to the gap in left-center field to tie the game at 5.

The Seminoles left 14 runners on base.

Jackson Nezuh started and went three innings, allowing three runs on three hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Carson Montgomery (4-1) struck out the only batter he faced in the 11th.

Georgia Southern pitchers hit four FSU batters. Jaime Ferrer was hit twice, the 17th time he has been hit this season.

FSU has now played seven extra-inning games, including a 17-inning win over NC State on March 20.
