Lovett reflects on why he is coming back to FSU for 2022

Fabien Lovett said his love of football as well as Florida State coaches and teammates were driving factors in his decision to return for the 2022 season.

Lovett made the decision official on Twitter on Thursday afternoon with a simple “I’m coming back” post. On Thursday evening, in an interview with the Osceola, Lovett expanded on his decision.

“I feel like I have a lot more to learn from Coach Odell (Haggins),” Lovett said. “I see the program is growing up and I feel like this year is going to be a big year for us because I feel like we have a lot of returning players and we all have that relationship already. We’ll help the new guys get acclimated to the program faster. It’s going to be a great year this year. It’s going to be a turnaround. Big-time.”

In 2021, Lovett had 28 tackles, including 4.5 for loss and 2.0 sacks. He started in nine of FSU’s 12 games and doubled his total tackles from the 2020 season, which was his first year in Tallahassee following a transfer from Mississippi State.

Lovett also said he is on track to graduate with a degree in Social Sciences in December.

In the fall, Lovett started a GoFundMe in October with the goal of raising $10,000 to help his infant son, Fabien Jr., with his medical bills. With help from more than 400 donors, Lovett has raised $18,000.

Fabien Lovett Jr. will turn 1 on Feb. 28.

“He’s doing great,” Lovett said. “He had his checkup. Waiting on him to get older and grow out of the feeding tube and oxygen tank. … My son is my main motivation. It’s not even about me.”

A game captain through the fall, Lovett was an honorable mention All-ACC pick after the 2021 season.

Lovett and Robert Cooper are part of a veteran and deep defensive tackle group that also includes Dennis Briggs Jr., Malcolm Ray, Jarrett Jackson, Joshua Farmer, Shambre Jackson and TJ Davis plus signees Daniel Lyons and Bishop Thomas.

“It was coach Odell and Coop and my d-linemen,” Lovett said about who helped him make his decision. “We’re all coming back. We’re going to be unstoppable next year.”
