Cade Roberts may not be a name that sparks a lot of conversation when FSU fans talk about recruiting but the son of FSU tight end Dave Roberts might be a name you want to keep track of this fall. The Seminoles legacy, who is a class of 2022 prospect, is making quite a name for himself as a wide receiver at Santa Rosa Beach (Fla.) South Walton, where his father is also the offensive coordinator.
As a junior the younger Roberts had a breakout season, leading the state with 88 receptions for 1,350 yards and 10 touchdowns in 10 games. That kind of production has gotten the attention of several colleges, including FSU. Roberts holds offers from FAU, UT-Martin, Austin Peay and Stetson but has been hearing from Florida State, USF and Coastal Carolina on a regular basis this offseason.
Most of the communication between Roberts and FSU has come from Seminoles wide receivers coach Ron Dugans and cornerback coach Marcus Woodson, according to Cade.
Roberts, who is 6-foot and 190 pounds, says his father has often been his coach throughout his life in multiple sports and has always coached him hard.
“It’s a good connection with him,” Roberts said of playing for his father. “I’ve learned a lot from him. He played tight end at Florida State, so he knows what he’s talking about.”
Roberts, who lines up primarily as a slot receiver in his father’s offense, has of course grown up as a fan of the Seminoles and has always looked up to FSU players past and present.
“I loved watching Rashad Greene when I was little,” said Roberts. “I think he was probably one of the best receivers in Florida State history.”
Roberts was on FSU’s campus multiples times this spring to attend scrimmages and will be back in Tallahassee on June 6 for Florida State’s Sunshine Showcase camp, where he will look to continue to impress the Seminoles football staff. And while he hasn’t received an offer from FSU, it is something he has been thinking about since he first began playing football.
“My dad went there, and I’ve been going to Tallahassee all my life, so that is my dream school right now,” said Roberts.
Dave Roberts did a podcast with the Osceola staff in April about his time at FSU, coaching high school football and his son’s recruitment. You can listen here.
