Logan Lacey had a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the eighth inning as Florida State rallied to take a 6-4 win over Virginia Tech in the series opener on Friday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va.
The Hokies led 3-0 through five innings before the Seminoles pieced together the comeback against the VT bullpen. FSU chipped away gradually, beginning in the sixth on Robby Martin’s RBI single. Reese Albert followed in the seventh with a solo home run.
FSU (5-5, 3-4 ACC) scored three runs in the eighth to pull ahead. Matheu Nelson led off with a double and Lacey pinch hit for Elijah Cabell, smacking a two-run homer to left field. Ryan Romano had his first college hit, an RBI single to give the Seminoles an insurance run in the eighth.
Robby Martin added another RBI single in the ninth.
FSU left-hander Parker Messick pitched five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Jack Anderson tossed two shutout innings, striking out three.
Chase Haney (1-0) picked up the win, while Davis Hare picked up his first save of 2021.
VT left-hander Peyton Alford allowed just one earned run in 5.2 innings, striking out 10. He now has 10 strikeouts in back-to-back outings. The Hokies fall to 8-4, 4-3.
