Kerr hits walk-off HR as FSU finishes sweep of UF

Florida State has a season sweep of Florida for the first time under coach Lonni Alameda. And the Seminoles finished with an unblemished 30-0 mark in the regular season in non-conference games.

Jahni Kerr smacked a 2-0 pitch over the wall in right-center field to give the Seminoles a 2-1 win over Florida on Wednesday night in front of the fifth-largest crowd in program history. It was Kerr’s fifth home run of the season and FSU’s fifth walk-off victory of the season.

“It was definitely very exciting and electric,” Kerr said. “Just looking back in the dugout, rounding the bases, looking at the coach on third, it was a great feeling.”

FSU (46-5) improved to 24-4 at home, with the UF game being the final regular-season home game. The Seminoles swept UF for the first time since 2006 (for reference, Kerr was 4 years old and Alameda’s first season at FSU was 2009).

Kathryn Sandercock (25-1) pitched seven innings, giving up two hits and an earned run. She had four strikeouts and gave up just two walks.

After UF scored a run in the second on an RBI groundout, Sydney Sherrill tied it in the third inning with an RBI double. Sherrill’s 12th double of 2022 — and 78th of her career — scored Kaley Mudge. It was also Sherrill’s 200th career RBI.

“There’s something special with this team and I honestly can’t put my finger on it right now,” Alameda said. “Every time people ask, I say, ‘I don’t know what we are.’ And that’s really cool. We’ve won games with base running, we’ve done it defense, we’ve done it pitching, we do it late, we stay in it, we stay in the fight. Just really special things going on with this team right now.”

FSU announced attendance at 1,764, with the majority of the chair back seats full and the crowd spilled over into the berm down the left-field line. The attendance does not count a large gathering of fans across the street in the parking garage.

Florida dropped to 38-14.
