GT shuts down Noles, who drop second straight ACC series

Atlanta native Brett Roberts led No. 20 Florida State with a season-high three hits, but the Seminoles fell 10-0 at Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon. Two of Roberts’ three hits went for extra bases and he finished with a team-high six hits in the series.

FSU (18-13, 7-8 ACC) has now dropped two straight ACC series after opening with series wins over Duke, NC State and Wake Forest in league play.

Both pitchers were rolling through the first two innings, working around runners on base without allowing any runs. In the third, Georgia Tech loaded the bases with two singles and a walk before Ross Dunn (1-3) allowed a bases-loaded walk and a three-run double.

Down 4-0, the Noles loaded the bases against Marquis Grissom Jr. (2-3) in the fourth but a lineout to second base ended the inning. In the fifth, FSU was poised to get on the board when James Tibbs doubled and Roberts singled, but Tibbs was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

FSU stranded 14 runners on Sunday, including at least one each in the first eight innings.

The Yellow Jackets (21-12, 7-8) added a run in the fourth inning and two unearned runs in the seventh. GT hit its second bases-clearing double in the eighth to close out the scoring.
