With pitching and pop, FSU sweeps DH at Wake

Florida State won its fourth series to begin the 2022 season by taking both games of a doubleheader on Sunday at Wake Forest.

Game 1: FSU 5, Wake Forest 1

Jackson Greene had a two-run home run and Jaime Ferrer went 4 for 5 with three doubles as the Florida State baseball team defeated Wake Forest 5-1 in game 1 of a doubleheader on Sunday.

Bryce Hubbart didn’t have his best control in giving up five walks in 5.1 innings, but he gave up just a hit and an earned run. The left-hander had nine strikeouts.

Greene, Brett Roberts and Brock Mathis each had two hits for FSU, which pounded out 13 hits and five doubles.

Wake threatened in the sixth inning, loading the bases after Hubbart had left the game and Jackson Baumeister issued a walk to the only batter he faced. But Jonah Scolaro got a strikeout to end the threat without FSU giving up a run.

Scolaro pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three hits while striking out three.

Wake right-hander Josh Hartle allowed five runs (four earned) on 12 hits in 5.2 innings.

Game 2 of the doubleheader will begin around 5:05 p.m. and will be televised by Bally Sports’ regional networks.

Game 2: FSU 3, Wake Forest 2

Ross Dunn had 14 strikeouts and Davis Hare shut the door with four strikeouts for the save as FSU claimed game 2 of the doubleheader 3-2.

Dunn allowed a pair of first-inning hits, including a Brock Wilken home run, but did not give up a hit over the next five innings. The left-hander’s 14 strikeouts are the most for a Seminole since Drew Parrish had 14 in the 2018 ACC Tournament against NC State.

Alex Toral had a home run, the 40th of his career, in the second inning. Brock Mathis followed with a double, Jordan Carrion singled and Mathis scored on Jackson Greene’s sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.

Jaime Ferrer singled to right field to score Carrion and give FSU (10-5, 2-1 ACC) the lead.

The Demon Deacons are now 13-3, 1-2.

Logan Lacey had a hit in both games Sunday and has a team-high nine-game hitting streak.
