Gibbons describes thrill of ‘greatest play in football’ to defeat Miami

Florida State offensive lineman Dillan Gibbons spoke after Wednesday’s practice on the game-winning drive against Miami, with Jordan Travis’ quarterback sneak providing the winning touchdown in the 31-28 victory on Saturday. Gibbons has experience facing Boston College before and was also a teammate of current BC quarterback Phil Jurkovec when they played together a Notre Dame. Here are some thoughts from Gibbons:

(The pride of the final score but also the toughness of the offense on the touchdown) “A lot of my teammates and a lot of my coaches consider the victory formation to be the greatest play in football. I am not of that opinion. I firmly believe that the flying V, the goal-line wedge, the QB sneak is the greatest play in football. When we heard that that play was going to be run we knew that play would be run for another three downs if necessary. At that point, we knew we had to score, we knew we had to convert. I had full confidence in our coaches’ ability, Jordan Travis and everyone else on the line of scrimmage. That was a great moment. Probably one of the best moments of my college career so far. Best play in football.”

(Did he know where Travis was going to run, behind which lineman on the play) “I am blindly blocking. I am trying to remove my guy from his gap and put him 10 yards in the backfield. I have no idea where the quarterback is going to go I hope that I can make a big enough hole for him to go through.”

(When did he know Travis had scored?) “I was still driving people. I was still getting after it. I had no clue who scored until I rolled over and saw him on my lap. It was an absolutely awesome experience. If you walk into Doak Campbell right now you can still see the cleat marks in the grass.”

(This week’s game at BC) “We’re very excited. I’ve been to Boston before. Played there. It’s going to be awesome to see some of the guys I knew from Notre Dame. Phil Jurkovec will be there. One of my old, good buddies. But at the end of the day it’s going to be another great test. We’re excited as an offensive line to be able to establish that line of scrimmage and try to have the same success we did last week.”
