Gainer to return to FSU in 2022

Amari Gainer became the second prominent Florida State player to announce he would return to the program in 2022 when the linebacker made his intentions public on Monday afternoon.

Gainer had 59 tackles and had 5.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble in 2021 in what was his redshirt sophomore season. He played in 12 games, starting three, this fall.

In a post on Twitter, Gainer shared his appreciation toward FSU and fans as well as family and friends for their support.

“At this time I would like to announce that I have decided to finish what I started and continue my academic and athletic career at Florida State University,” Gainer posted. “I’m all in. Let’s work.”

His return helps solidify a linebacker group that includes Kalen DeLoach and D.J. Lundy. FSU has seen some departures at the position as two reserves — Jaleel McRae and Jayion McCluster — have entered the transfer portal.

Beyond DeLoach, Lundy and Gainer, FSU has just a few returning linebackers off the 2021 roster in Stephen Dix Jr., Jordan Eubanks, Jadarius Green-McKnight and walk-on Cortez Andrews.

He joins defensive tackle Robert Cooper as Seminoles in the two-deep depth chart who announced they are coming back. A number of reserve players have opted to enter the transfer portal.
