Florida State has moved into the top 5 for the first time this season, jumping up to the No. 5 position in the D1baseball.com poll following a 3-1 week — a midweek victory over UCF and a series win over Duke. The Seminoles (16-7) moved up two spots and now face a week with four games against a pair of ranked teams.
In the Baseball America poll, FSU is also up to No. 5 (a jump of three spots).
FSU will next play Florida (17-7) on Tuesday in Jacksonville at 7 p.m. (SEC Network). The Gators slid six spots to No. 14 in the D1baseball.com rankings (they are No. 16 in Baseball America’s poll). This weekend, the Seminoles will host Notre Dame (12-5). The Fighting Irish are No. 14 in Baseball America’s poll and 16th in D1baseball.com’s rankings.
Coach Mike Martin Jr. said the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, which seats 11,000 fans, offers a neutral-site feel.
“It’s a great environment,” Martin Jr. said. “I’m excited to see how the guys react. it’s a football kind of crowd. It’s pretty much split down the middle. … It’s a really great ballpark. We’re trying to get them to where they’re comfortable in uncomfortable situations. Here’s the next one. I’m looking forward to it.”
Messick named ACC pitcher of week
For the second time this year, redshirt sophomore Parker Messick is the ACC pitcher of the week. The left-hander struck out a career-high 14 batters in FSU’s 4-0 win over Duke on Friday night.
Messick, from Plant City, Fla., ranks second nationally with 65 strikeouts in 38.0 innings. He struck out the side in the third and sixth innings against the Blue Devils and has started both of FSU’s shutout victories this season. Messick (4-1) lowered his season ERA to 2.84.
Ross Dunn, FSU’s No. 3 starter, is the only other player in the conference with a 14-strikeout game this year.
Messick was named Pitcher of the Week earlier this season for his 13-strikeout, no-walk game against Samford.
