Florida State will pay Samford $450,000 to play their Sept. 12 game at Doak Campbell Stadium. A game time has not been set.
Samford went 5-7 in 2019 under coach Chris Hatcher, who returns for a sixth season this fall.
The payout is in line with recent guarantee games between FSU and FCS opponents. FSU paid Samford $500,000 for a 2018 game and Alabama State $425,000 for a 2019 game.
An ACC crew will officiate the Samford-FSU game.
The contract was signed on Nov. 20, 2019. There is general language about an “impossibility” clause where neither school will be liable if the game can’t be played due to power failure, severe weather, war or unforeseen catastrophe. While pandemic is not specifically included, the inclusion of “catastrophe” would likely protect FSU and Samford financially if a game is not played.
FSU opens the season on Sept. 5 against West Virginia at Atlanta. Following the Samford game, FSU will travel to Boise State on Sept. 19. After a bye week, FSU plays at NC State on Oct. 3 in the Seminoles’ ACC opener.
