FSU trying out options at 1B, 3B

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Florida State is in test mode.

Mike Martin Jr. is trying a number of platoon situations across the infield as he looks for the right option at first and third base. The middle infield appears to be settled with Nander de Sedas at shortstop and junior-college transfer Jackson Greene settled at second base.

Through four games, FSU has tried Carter Smith, Tyrell Brewer, Tyler Martin and Cooper Swanson at third base. And at first base, Smith, Swanson and Dylan Simmons have been used. Martin Jr. is often Martin and Smith, who hit lefty, against right-handed pitchers (Simmons, Brewer and Swanson hit from the right-hand side).

“It’s going to be a while,” Martin Jr. said. “It’s one of those situations where somebody grabs it and goes, awesome. If they don’t, we’re going to figure out who is going to be the best fit at certain times. It could be somebody is really rolling with the bat and you have to roll the dice if you will defensively. I’m hoping one of them grabs it and runs with it.”

It’s a small sample size and realistically too early to tell if there is any separation. Dylan Simmons is 4 for 8 with a pair of doubles, three RBI and three runs. Tyler Martin is 4 for 10 with a double, four runs scored and five RBI.

FSU’s hitting leaders are below:

Rotation remains same

The Seminoles’ weekend rotation will remain the same for this weekend’s home series against Cincinnati. FSU will go with right-hander CJ Van Eyk on Friday, followed by left-hander Shane Drohan on Saturday and right-hander Conor Grady on Sunday.

FSU-Cincinnati begins on Friday at 6 p.m. Saturday’s game is at 2 p.m., while Sunday’s game is at 1 p.m. All games in the FSU-Cincinnati series will air on ACC Network Extra.

Mientkiewicz joins ACC Network

Former FSU baseball player Doug Mientkiewicz will be an analyst this season for the ACC Network. Mientkiewicz won a gold medal in the Olympics and was part of the 2004 Boston Red Sox team that won the World Series. He played 12 years in the majors and has spent time as a manager in the Minnesota Twins’ farm system.
