Florida State received quite a challenge on Sunday in the Tallahassee Regional final.
But Makinzy Herzog had a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning to help the Seminoles rally for a 7-6 win.
“Really proud of our team right now,” FSU coach Lonni Alameda said. “Of course we are happy to be on the winning side, but the fight we saw was outstanding. We got sucker punched and haven’t been down like that in the fifth inning, but the team came together and played as Team 36 this afternoon.”
Carsyn Gordon also added a two-run home run for FSU (54-8), which has now won a regional in seven straight seasons.
The Seminoles had built a 5-1 lead but that vanished through the middle innings as South Carolina scored a run in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead.
Kathryn Sandercock and Meghan King each gave up three runs. But King wrapped up the regional by working out of a two-on, two-out jam in the seventh inning. King picked up her third save.
FSU will now host a best-of-three Super Regional against Oklahoma State next weekend. Game times and TV are to be announced. The winner of the Super Regional will earn a spot in the Women’s College World Series.
Tickets for the Super Regional will go on sale Monday and can be ordered either on Seminoles.com or by calling 888-FSU-NOLE, or at the ticket office at JoAnne Graf Field on each game day. The main FSU ticket office is located at Gate B on the west side of Doak Campbell Stadium and the office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
