FSU Needs for 2022 Class: Defense

In part 2 of Florida State’s needs for the class of 2022, we will focus on the defensive side of the football. If you missed it, here’s a look at the offensive needs.

Defensive ends (2)

FSU has a ton of bodies at the defensive end position. The question is do they have a dude, a guy who can get after the quarterback. With the addition of Patrick Payton and George Wilson they hope they do. For the 2022 Class, Nyjalik Kelly is a great start. He has the ability to get off the ball and put pressure on the quarterback. The Dillard star will be important to hold on to as he is one of the better ends in the state of Florida. Aarron Hester (Fletcher High in Jacksonville) is another player who is a potential lean to FSU. He would give them some versatility at defensive end. You can also line him up as a stand up outside linebacker in certain situations. The key to this class is landing the signature of Marvin Jones Jr. The legacy prospect is one of the best pure pass rushers in the state of Florida. Not since Brian Burns played at FSU has the coaching staff had a guy who could pressure the quarterback like Jones Jr.

On the Recruiting Board:

·         Nyjalik Kelly (3) 6-4, 240 – (Dillard HS) – (Committed)

·         Aaron Hester (3) 6-3, 220 – (Fletcher HS)

·         Richard Thomas (4) 6-2, 240 – (American Heritage Plantation)

·         Marvin Jones Jr: (4) 6-4, 225 (American Heritage Plantation)

·         Aaron Wilson: (4 ) 6-3, 230 (Ocoee, HS)

Defensive tackle (2)

FSU is looking to add Tywone Malone to their defensive tackle room. If they can land him, then landing an elite guy in 2022 won’t be as important. FSU has some bodies and guys to develop at DT. Malone would give them a top guy in the middle. Brandon Cleveland was considered an early commitment to the Seminoles until he surprised many and pulled the trigger for Miami. He will still be pursued. Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy from Lakeland would be a big-time get but FSU has not had a ton of success recruiting Lakeland HS. Thomas from Gaither HS could be the sleeper in this year’s class.

On the Recruiting Board:

·         Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy (5) 6-3, 275 (Lakeland HS)

·         Brandon Cleveland (4) 6-3, 260 (Carrollwood Day, HS) (Committed to Miami)

·         Dominick James-(4) 6-2, 270 (IMG Academy)

·         Jamari Lyons-(4) 6-4, 295 (Viera)

·         Segree Graham-(3) 6-3, 250 (Bartram Trail) (Committed to Cincinnati)

·         Tawfiq Thomas-(3) 6-4, 325 (Gaither)

Linebacker (2)

FSU brings back Emmett Rice and Leonard Warner, both of whom could have transferred or graduated. With the return of both players FSU will have much-needed depth. Amari Gainer is a candidate to leave early if he has a great season. DeCalon Brooks will have exhausted his eligibility after this season. Kevon Glenn just decided to enter the transfer portal. There could be a few more who could leave as well. FSU needs to bring in at least two guys next year. Wesley Bissainthe would be the star of next year’s class if FSU could pull him in. He would provide some athletic ability at linebacker for FSU. Leon Hart at Miami Edison is someone to keep an eye on. He could blow up this upcoming season. Devin Smith of Oakleaf is an FSU lean. The question is will FSU take his commitment right now?

On the Recruiting Board:

·         Wesley Bissainthe-(4) 6’1-200 (Miami Central)

·         Jaron Willis-(4) 6’2-220 (Lee County, Ga.)

·         Travion Lathan-(4) 6’2-200 (Gulliver Prep)

·         Devin Smith-(3) 6’2-235 (Orange Park Oakleaf, HS)

·         Demario Tolan-(NR) 6’3-200 (Kissimmeee Tohopekaliga High)

·         Leon Hart-(3) 6’2-190 (Miami Edison)

Safety (2)

Jammie Robinson comes in and gives FSU a safety who can play for the next 2-3 years. If he is good enough expect him to leave early. He does give FSU some versatility in the secondary. FSU also added Brandon Moore this off-season. He is a one-year rental for the Seminoles. FSU loses Carlos Becker, Cyrus Fagan, Jaiden Lars-Woodbey, Hamsah Nasirildeen and Raymond Woodie III at safety from the 2020 roster. FSU needs to improve the safety room. One way to do that would be landing Sam McCall from Lake Gibson High. Azareyeh Thomas is a lean towards FSU and would really help out the safety room next season.

On the Recruiting Board:

·         JyVonte McClnedon (3) 6’2-180 (Lake Gibson)

·         Dominick Fields-(NR) 6’0-180 (Bartram Trail-HS)

·         Ja’Cari Henderson-(NR) 6’0-155 (Seminole HS)

·         Demari Henderson (NR) 6’0-150 (Seminole HS)

·         Sam McCall-(5) 6’0-180 (Lake Gibson, HS)

·         Azareyeh Thomas-(4) 6’3-175 (Niceville, HS)

·         Kody Jones (4) 6’0-180 (Germantown HS, Tennessee)

Cornerback (2)

Depending on what happens this season FSU could have some losses at CB. They return Demorie Tate, Sidney Williams, Meiko Dotson, Jarrian Jones, Renardo Green and Jarvis Brownlee. These guys have the talent to be among the best secondaries in the ACC. We expect FSU to bring in at least two corners in the 2022 class. Travis Hunter is the premier corner in the country. Having Hunter and Tate on the field at the same time gives FSU 2 elite players at CB.

On the Recruiting Board:

·         Travis Hunter (5) 6’1-170 (Committed)

·         Daylen Everette-(4) 6’0-180 (IMG Academy)
