Florida State lost three defensive commitments on Friday night.
Less than two weeks away from the early signing period – and potentially days away from the announcement of a new coach – four-star linebacker Keyshawn Greene as well as three-star defensive ends Morven Joseph and Josh Griffis took to social media and backed off their verbal pledges to the Seminoles.
The verbal commitments are non-binding. It’s possible that the prospects will talk to FSU’s new coach and sign with the Seminoles but it’s certainly plausible that they are now looking elsewhere with about 10 days to go until the early signing period window opens up on Dec. 18.
While no announcement for a head coach has been made, it’s possible that FSU will say something in the hours after Memphis’ AAC championship game against Cincinnati on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (ABC). A press conference has been planned for Sunday or Monday, depending on when Norvell can arrive in Tallahassee to meet boosters and media.
FSU coaches had hoped that Joseph and Griffis could make an early impact as true freshmen in 2020 on the defensive line. With seniors Joshua Kaindoh and Janarius Robinson heading into their senior seasons, the Seminoles need to stockpile players at the position. And it’s plausible that Kaindoh, who was lost for the season in week 3 due to an injury, may not be able to return at the start of 2020.
Greene is another significant loss in that he could help stabilize a linebacking corps that needs a versatile prospect to shore up a defense that struggled against the pass and could use another run-stuffer.
The Seminoles had previously lost a few prospects who had committed, including four-star tailback Jaylan Knighton and four-star cornerback Jalen Harrell.
FSU’s signing class has slipped to No. 22 in the 247Sports rankings.
