FSU baseball hires two assistants

Florida State baseball coach Mike Martin Jr. has made two important hires to his staff.

The Seminoles have hired Kentucky pitching coach Jimmy Belanger, according to a report by D1baseball.com on Wednesday morning. Belanger has been considered a young coach on the rise and he has helped develop a number of MLB draft picks, including a 2019 first-rounder in LHP Zach Thompson (6-1, 2.40, 130 strikeouts and 34 walks in 90 innings).

FSU has also reportedly hired Mike Metcalf as its hitting coach. Metcalf spent 11 seasons in pro baseball, all with the San Francisco Giants. The Sarasota, Fla., native was recently the Giants’ Southeast Supervisor. Metcalf’s hire was also previously reported by D1baseball.com.

Martin Jr. had looked to find an assistant coach with MLB ties to help in scouting, recruiting and developing prospects. Metcalf is a good fit in those regards. And Belanger, who has had dozens of pitchers drafted in his career, would also appear to be a good complement to what Martin Jr. wants to achieve with the Seminoles in 2020 and beyond.
