Florida State went into its matchup with fifth-ranked Notre Dame knowing it would need to play its best game of the year, get a few turnovers and capitalize on those Notre Dame mistakes to pull off the upset. Early in the game it did just that with FSU capitalizing on two of Notre Dame fumbles, which accounted for 10 of its first-quarter points. They were the key factors in the Seminoles taking a 17-14 lead into the second quarter.
