FSU secured the commitment of Lakeland (Fla.) Lake Gibson High safety prospect Sam McCall on Sunday night. McCall became the sixth 2022 recruit to commit to Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell.
McCall, who is 6-foot and 180 pounds, is considered a five-star prospect by 247Sports, which classifies him as an athlete. They have him ranked as the No. 5 ATH in the country, the 35th-best overall prospect in the country and the No. 6 prospect from Florida for the 2022 class.
Osceola Recruiting Analyst and President of Elite Scouting Services Charles Fishbein has McCall ranked as the fourth-best safety prospect in Florida.
McCall had been committed to Florida since last October before reopening his recruitment in January. Last season at Lake Gibson, McCall totaled 18 tackles in 13 games. He also led the team in receiving with 52 catches for 903 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The Osceola’s Evaluation of McCall
Charles Fishbein: McCall has great ball skills. Here is a kid that has been making plays since his freshman season. One thing McCall will do well is open field tackling. He is one of the more physical safeties in the class of 2022. McCall is a guy you want to put in the box and let him help out in run support. His coverage skills are solid but not as good as some of the safeties I have rated ahead of him.
Patrick Burnham: McCall is listed as an Athlete but he is a football player that makes plays. Whether he lines up at wide receiver, quarterback or cornerback he makes plays. As a defensive back he shows fluid hips, great change of direction and closes on wide receivers very quickly. He showed physicality as a tackler and a blocker. Has very good speed and get to full speed very quickly. As a wide receiver he demonstrates very good hands and does of good job of extending his arms to make catches and not letting the ball get into his chest. He also does a good job of stacking cornerbacks on deep routes. McCall has quick feet, good balance and is good at getting up field after the catch. He high points the ball well on offense or defense. Definitely has the athleticism, size and versatility to play one of several positions once he gets to college.
