Messick tosses a gem, but ND’s Cole hits HR in 12th to take game 1

Ryan Cole smacked a two-out, two-run home run in the 12th inning to give Notre Dame a 2-0 win over Florida State on Friday night. Carter Putz had a one-out double off the screen earlier in the inning.

Cole’s shot wrapped up what was quite the pitching duel as teams put some runners in scoring position but could not push a run across for 11 innings. FSU’s Parker Messick threw 6.2 hitless innings, and eight shutout innings, while Notre Dame’s John Bertrand tossed 7.2 shutout innings.

The Seminoles (16-9, 6-4 ACC) struck out 18 times. But they had some scoring chances but were just 1 for 12 with runners on base and 0 for 3 with runners in scoring position. Reese Albert also hit an opposite-field fly ball to the track in left in the 10th inning.

“I’m going to find guys that can do it, that are not falling in love with the almighty home run and getting pull happy and starting their swings early,” FSU coach Mike Martin Jr. said. “It’s the kiss of death for a hitter. You got too hit. You got to think backside. Be ready to hit the fastballs. Leave the breaking balls alone. Unless it’s on a tee.”

Notre Dame improved to 14-5, 3-4 ACC.

It was the fifth extra-inning game for FSU this season, with the Seminoles going 1-4.

Messick had some of his best control of the year, not allowing a walk — the fifth time in the last two seasons he has not given up a free pass in a start. The left-hander also had 11 strikeouts, the 10th time in his career that he had double figures in strikeouts. Messick was as efficient as ever, using his off-speed pitches well and throwing 108 pitches (68 strikes) and lowered his ERA to 2.35.

He had not gone this deep in a game since a March 5, 2021 win over Virginia in which he went eight innings.

FSU got out of a jam in the 10th. Jack Zyska drew a one-out walk and later stole second base. Ryan Cole then walked, chasing Davis Hare and bringing in Jonah Scolaro. Jaime Ferrer charged and dove for a fly ball in right field for out No. 2 in the 10th, while Logan Lacey charged a grounder to third and threw out the runner to end the inning.

Tyler Martin had a two-out double in the eighth inning in what was his first start of 2022.

Bertrand didn’t allow a hit in the first four innings and finished with 12 strikeouts in 7.2 innings. He left the game after giving up Martin’s double, and Ryan McLinskey induced a groundout to end the inning.
