An early pitching duel quickly turned as Notre Dame played long ball.
Jack Zyska and Brooks Coetzee hit two-run home runs to as Notre Dame defeated Florida State 5-3 on Thursday afternoon in pool play at the ACC Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. The Fighting Irish will advance to Saturday’s semifinal.
FSU (33-23) split its games in pool play but as the ninth seed is the lowest in the pool and needed to win both games to advance.
Colton Vincent had an RBI single in the third to score Alex Toral, tying the game at 1. But Zyska and Coetzee added home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.
Brock Mathis had a two-out, two-run single in the ninth to cut the ND lead to 5-3. Tyler Martin flied out to end the game.
ND left-hander John Michael Bertrand (8-2) pitched eight innings, scattering five hits and a walk while striking out eight.
Parker Messick (6-5) pitched five innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and a walk. The left-hander had four strikeouts, giving him 140 for the season and moving up to eighth on FSU’s single-season list.
Ross Dunn tossed two scoreless innings, striking out three. Montgomery pitched a shutout inning, while Davis Hare and Jonah Scolaro wrapped up the ninth.
Notre Dame will face the UNC-Va. Tech winner in one semifinal, while Pittsburgh and NC State will face off in the other semifinal. Both games are on Saturday.
Baseball America has FSU as a No. 3 seed at a regional hosted by Southern Miss, which also features LSU and Fairfield. D1baseball.com views FSU as a No. 3 seed in a regional hosted by Auburn, which also features Coastal Carolina and College of Charleston.
