Atkins, Johnson, Woodson earn raises in offseason

Florida State has extended the contracts of five assistant coaches this offseason. Amendments to contracts for Alex Atkins, Chris Thomsen, David Johnson, Chris Marve and Marcus Woodson were provided as part of a public records request to the Osceola and other news outlets.

Alex Atkins’ contract was extended through December 2023 earlier this year. Atkins’ salary escalates annually, rising to $575,000 in 2021 and $625,000 in 2022 as well as 2023. In 2020, Atkins was paid $500,000 in his first year as FSU’s offensive line coach. 

He will owe a buyout of 100 percent of his annual salary through Dec. 31, 2022 if he departs FSU with the exceptions being a college head coach job, college offensive coordinator with primary play caller job or NFL job. On Jan. 1, 2023 or later the buyout drops to 25 percent.

Running backs coach / recruiting coordinator David Johnson’s contract has been extended through Dec. 31, 2022. Johnson will earn $475,000 in 2021 and $500,000 in 2022 after making $400,000 in his first season. He has similar buyout language to Atkins’ contract.

Deputy head coach / tight ends coach Chris Thomsen’s contract has been extended through Dec. 31, 2022. He has similar buyout language to Atkins’ contract.

Linebackers coach / defensive run game coordinator Chris Marve’s contract has been extended through Dec. 31, 2022. He will owe a buyout of 100 percent of his annual salary through Dec. 31, 2022 if he departs FSU with the exceptions being a college head coach job, college defensive coordinator with primary play caller job or NFL job. On Jan. 1, 2023 or later the buyout drops to 25 percent.

Defensive backs coach / defensive pass game coordinator Marcus Woodson’s contract has been extended through Dec. 31, 2022. Woodson will earn $475,000 in 2021 and $500,000 in 2022 after making $400,000 in his first season. He has similar buyout language to Marve’s contract.

No amendments were provided for offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller or assistants Ron Dugans, John Papuchis and Odell Haggins. Dillingham and Fuller are under contract through Dec. 31, 2022 under original three-year deals.
