University of Charlotte offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Alex Atkins is expected to be named be named as the Seminoles’ next offensive line coach. Noles247 first reported the move and the Osceola has confirmed via a source.
This will be the fourth assistant hired by head coach Mike Norvell on offense. Atkins will join offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham, wide receiver coach Ron Dugans and offensive assistant Chris Thomsen on that side of the ball. Thomsen’s position title has yet to be announced.
One possibility would be for both Atkins and Thomsen to work together in coaching the offensive line. The other possibility would be for one to work with the tight ends/H-backs and the other the offensive line.
Atkins was the assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Tulane. In 2018 he was the Green Wave’s run game coordinator. Tulane ranked 23rd in the nation in rushing offense that season. The Green Wave ranked 20th and 26th in rushing offense in both 2016 and 2017, respectively.
Prior to his time at Tulane, Atkins spent two years (2014-2015) at Georgia Southern as the offensive line coach. He also spent two years (2012-2013) as the offensive line coach at Chattanooga, where he worked on the same staff as new FSU defensive coordinator Adam Fuller.
From 2010 through 2011 Atkins was the offensive line coach at Itawamba (Miss.) Community College. He also spent time as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Tennessee-Martin, and Marshall.
Atkins was a two-time all-conference performer as an offensive guard at UT-Martin.
