Analysis: What FSU is getting in 2023 QB commit Chris Parson

When Mike Norvell took over Florida State back in December 2019 his first task was fixing the quarterback situation at FSU. He inherited a quarterback room that had Jordan Travis and James Blackman.

His first step was to recruit two high school prospects and landed Tate Rodemaker and Chubba Purdy. These two both got playing time as freshman. While neither established themselves as future stars they have shown glimpses of what they can do, although they are in a developmental stage of their career.

Once the 2020 season was done priority No. 1 was to land a grad transfer. FSU went into the transfer portal and pulled in McKenzie Milton from UCF. The talented signal caller has been out of football for the past two years as he has been recovering from a serious knee injury. This spring FSU focused on landing a top signal caller in the class of 2022. The coaches got one early in the process when Nicco Marchiol committed. FSU was looking for two quarterbacks in the class of 2022 and focused on A.J. Duffy from Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy. Once he committed coaches thought they were done. Marchiol decided to DE commit before committing to West Virginia.

So where does FSU go from here? The coaches got a head start on 2023 recruiting with the commitment of Chris Parson from Brentwood, Tenn. FSU is still looking for another commitment from a QB in the class of 2023. We expect them to wait for one of the bigger names on their board to pull the trigger.

What we like about Parson

Very good athlete. Here is a kid that moves well in the pocket. He can beat a defense with his legs. Your offensive coordinator is going to have to design run plays to take advantage of his running skills. He is a threat anytime he takes off and runs. His ability to create big plays with his legs makes him one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country. Parson also has a pretty good arm. He can push the ball down the field. He also does a very good job of leading his receivers. You will see him put the ball where only his guy can catch it. He is accurate throwing the ball down the field.

What we feel Parson needs to work on

One thing on film you notice is Parson throws to his first option on most of his throws – even if he has to wait for his receiver to get open. That is something that won’t be there at the next level. He is going to have to learn how to run through his progressions and find the open receiver. He is also going to have to learn that you can throw to your outlet guys. Let your backs make some plays for you. If he can learn to improve this part of his game, Parson will end up a very good college quarterback.

Final Thoughts

FSU needs to continue to improve the quarterback room. After this season Milton will give it a shot at the NFL but will most likely end up in coaching. Jordan Travis may just decide to go to another program, where he will get his chance to start. The guy who loses out in the QB battle between Chubba Purdy and Tate Rodemaker may also decide to hit the transfer portal. Duffy will be in the fold and in 2023 FSU will bring in Chris Parson. The odds are FSU will focus in on landing another signal caller in the class of 2023. What we can tell you is a position that was once a concern has now turned around and should be in good shape in the future.
